HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAUL!
Would you believe another family birthday today? This time it's my brother-in-law Paul's special day. It's getting to be quite an expensive month. Just got my favourite aunt's on the 28th, then we're through!

Another [almost] unbelievable event today - I took Daisy and George to the orthodontist as it's suspected they may need braces. Daisy felt that two of her top teeth go inwards a little so wanted the straightening (no-one else notices this or has ever commented, but at 15, appearance is very important. Remember?!!) George has one wonky 'eye tooth,' and a minor resemblance to Angel in Buffy in vampire mode!
The news was pretty horrific: Technically their cases are classed as 'for cosmetic reasons only' their teeth being clinically 'perfect' [even though George put his completly though his top lip during a rugby match, and will probably be scarred slightly for life.] They can either do nothing, or have four back teeth removed [hospital surgery job] then wear braces for two years, and finally round it all off with 5-7 years of wearing retainers. Further complications include the impending move to London of the dentist [the only such 'expert' in the area,] and the waiting list of at least 12 months for NHS treatment, [which is not covered by dental health insurance.] Super.
Daisy's decided she looks ok now :) and we're going to just try and have George's 'fang' removed.
Gee, I'm so looking forward to my trip tomorrow. Not!

Update: Reading this back I've probably made them sound terrible!
They are both totally gorgeous looking kids and I am so going to try & get my scanner fixed tomorrow and add some pics so you see for yourselves. [Bet you won't be able to spot anything weird with their teeth either!]

What! No Birthdays?!
[Actually, it would have been my grandmother's 112th birthday today but she died in 1991, aged 101.]

I was doing some research [I love that part!] for a site today and came across the works of Emily Post [1873-1960,] the 'etiquette guru' of the first half of the twentieth century.
While much of her work is [nowadays] politically & socially incorrect, it makes fascinating reading and gives great insight into 'Best Society' of the age.
Her most famous book 'Etiquette' published in 1922, has chapters to guide you through everything from weddings, chaperones & politics to letter writing, travelling & behaviour both at home and in public.

Chapter VIII. entitled 'Words, Phrases and Pronunciation' gives a list of 'Phrases Avoided in Good Society.'
So, to help you avoid those embarrassing faux-pas next time you're in 'polite company,' here's a selection of the best:

Aaahhhhh! The first weekend for a while with no 'house guests' so managed to sleep in 'til 9. Woke up with that lovely snuggly feeling you have when you know you don't have to rush.
And then I remembered...

I have to make a hat. Whaaaaaat????

I'm going to a 'ladies lunch' on Monday (soooo not me) and we all have to make and wear a hat for the occasion. At first I party-pooped and said I didn't have time, but after a bit of friendly cajoling changed my mind. I am NOT going to wear it until I actually get there and make sure everyone else has played the game fairly.

Anyway, had an idea and dashed into town this afternoon for supplies.
The World Cup thing has really taken over here - I've lost count of the number of cars I've seen sporting one, two or even four Union Jacks, and every Tom, Dick & Beckham seems to be wearing an England kit shirt. So, I'd decided to do a football-themed hat, y'know - the pitch for the base, then Subuteo-type players, goalposts etc. dotted over the top with little flags of the participating nations round the edge.

Couldn't find anything small enough, so spending tomorrow painting little red-kitted figures white and black [England strip,] and cutting out little flags & things from a ridiculously overpriced book [heinous crime, book destruction.] I'll let you know how it goes, but gee, I'm getting too old for all this 'Blue Peter' stuff.

[Blue Peter is an English tv show and was particularly well-known in the 60's & 70's for it's 'making things' slot.]

Still humming tunes I heard on last night's Eurovision Song Contest. My vote went to Israel's 'Light A Candle' but didn't do it much good [came about 14th I think.] I'd like to buy a copy but can only get hold of a cd with all the entries on and most were pretty bad.

Well, I made the hat - a bit amateur looking but ok. I'll let you know how it goes and try and try and post a pic soon. I've managed to get the kids pandering to my every whim today - by threatening to wear it when I pick them up from school tomorrow! :)

Spent some time this afternoon doing an interview with Elisabeth of Graphic Goo for the June issue. Trying to sound informative & knowledgeable and at the same time friendly and approachable isn't easy so I'll have another look tomorrow before I send it.

'The hat' won 2nd prize [out of 50] which came as a big surprise as I didn't even know it was a competition!
The down side was that I had to wear it and have a photo taken. Watch this space....
The things we do for friends huh?

Arty has to do a talk at school tomorrow about space so I helped him tonight by typing out his notes.
It's not a subject I know much about so learned a few new facts:

The earth is known to be around 4.6 billion years old.

The smallest planet is Pluto which can't be seen clearly enough with a human telescope to tell what it is made of.

The Sun is more than a million times bigger than earth and is mostly made up of hydrogen gas.

The temperature at the surface of the Sun is 5,500 degrees and at it's middle reaches over 15 million degrees.

There are at least a thousand billion stars in our Galaxy.
We can see one billion other Galaxies, so surely there must be other life forms out there...

Just finished [an sent] my interview off to Elisabeth at Graphic Goo
I think it's ok now - I don't sound tooooo know-it-all I hope!
One questions in particular made me smile and take a trip down memory lane: "What was the first set you made....."
Oh yes, I remember it well [who let Maurice Chevalier in here?]
I was so pleased with myself for doing it and hand coding everything including the rollovers. As it was my first set[November 1999] I'd kept a copy on disc. I've reworked the page and posted a link for people to look at & cringe [tho' I'll probably cringe more when it gets logged by Google and posted on all the search engines.] eek!
I'm not posting the link here [that would be what's know as 'professional suicide'] If you want a peek, you'll have to read the interview at GG, out at the beginning of June.

Apart from that, I spent a nice but frustrating day looking for some new stock images. Nice because I love browsing & buying artwork, but frustrating because I can't afford a fraction of what I'd like to buy.
I've downloaded lots of comps and am trying to decide which ones I truly can't live without.

Whoops!
Added THREE [new] linkware sets but then couldn't connect to post this and let you know. We had some terrible thunder storms overhead today maybe that was why?
I'm gradually going through the site and either reworking or discarding stuff I'm no longer happy with. At this rate I'll be finished around Christmas. Anyway, the three [new] sets are some of the reworked bits.
