monday 15 april 2002
The rest of the kids go back to school tomorrow so I'll be sinking
into deep depression by lunchtime [well nearly.] I think I've enjoyed
this school holiday as much as any. Maybe it's because they're getting
older and so don't need constant supervision. Maybe it's because
their company is so rewarding and enjoyable. Maybe it's because
they are growing up so fast that I I realize they won't always be
around so I treasure the times that we're together. Most probably
it's a combination of all these factors.
I LOVE MY KIDS and I'm proud that they are all pleasant, kind, helpful,
interesting and original members of society. Who could wish for
more?

tuesday 16 april 2002
Tax returns, year end accounts, numbers, figures, forms.
Today was much more depressing than I anticipated.
A trip to the accountants is definitely on the cards for next
week. I don't mind filling out the necessary stuff, but deciphering
that from all unnecessary gunk needs a pro.

wednesday 17 april 2002
We went into town today to pay for our Summer holiday [Southern
Spain.]
Seems like Tom's decided to come with us which is fantastic news.
It was going to be really weird without him - our first 'family
holiday' with one of us absent. Something I'll have to get used
to over the next few years I guess. [A bit like 'And Then There
Were None."]
We had an hour to fill in before picking up the kids from school,
and found a great shop I'd never come across before: S.F.Cody
It was so my kind of place, I'd quite happily move in there.
Full of funky, wacky, retro stuff, with everything from from furniture
to greetings cards to kitchen equipment to toys, candles and gizmos.
Looking through the catalogue I picked up, I'm mentally ticking
off everyone's Christmas presents:
Xan: the portable mini fridge in silver [to match the car]
and a telescope.
Tom: Glider Flight/Rally Racing day out/experience. And some
chocolate.
Daisy: The fog & bubble maker machines [just like in
the movies,] and by special request [hers] the [almost] naked man
ironing board cover [???]
George: A cascading water fountain and 'Titania's' Fortune
Telling Cards.
Arty: Minimoto Racing bike [35mph/302hp] - looks like a real
motorbike.
Me: It's my list so I'm going to treat myself too, OK? I
really want almost everything, but let's not be too greedy:
Some fun kitchen stuff such as the bright pink/red heart-shaped
buckets and leopard/zebra patterned brooms, a couple of dark brown
leather cubes [for the kids to sit on in my studio - the sofa is
way too small for 4 of them] and dozens of natural pebble/rose quartz/amethyst
tea-light holders to put on the floor around my huge Victorian cast
iron bath.

thursday 18 april 2002
Got an appointment with the accountant tomorrow, so dug out all
my paperwork and tried to get it in some kind of order. Candle-lit
bath. Bed.

friday 19 april 2002
My second Friday
Five and not the easiest as I really don't watch much TV.
I admit to watching several soaps, and one or two drama series,
but that's it. (I don't like chocolate either which is something
else people find hard to believe!!) Maybe I'm just weird!
1. What's your favorite TV show and why?
'Holby City' - UK drama set in a Manchester hospital.
I HATE medical stuff both real & on TV, but I like all the characters
in this and enjoy following their lives. (sad or what?!)
2. Who is your favorite television star?
George Lucas who plays surgeon Anton Meyer in 'Holby City.' Sigh....
3. What was your favorite TV show as a child?
When I was pre-school age there was very little children's tv
at all. 'Watch with Mother' is about all I can remember, and was
on each day after lunch for about 5 minutes. A few years later,
'Jackanory' and 'Blue Peter' were must-watch programmes. (I still
save all my empty washing up bottles and yoghurt cartons!) Teenage
(pre-boys) Saturday Nights were made bearable by 'Charlie's Angels'
and 'Starsky & Hutch' [incidentally, David Soul was in last
week's episode of Holby City!]
4. What show do you think should have been cancelled by now?
All sport programmes especially football (soccer.)
5. What new show do you hope escapes the axe this season?
Can't think of any new shows I've watched this season.

saturday 20 april 2002
Found a great site on a recent surfing trip with Arty for his
homework. America's
Story is an extremely well presented, fun place to start
finding out about 'The Land of the Free.' With sections such
as 'Meet Amazing Americans,' 'Jump Back in Time' and
'Explore the States' and plenty of fun stuff too, there's
no excuse for anyone to find learning dull here. |

sunday 21 april 2002
Despite my protestations about not watching much tv, I've got to
mention that I thoroughly enjoyed watching the third episode of
John Galsworthy's 'Forsyte
Saga' tonight. Too young to remember the BBC
dramatization in 1967, [the last major drama filmed in black
and white, at the then enormous cost of £250,000] I have nothing
to compare it with unlike my parent's generation for whom the series
was compulsive viewing.
I didn't expect to enjoy it so much. I have a perverse habit of
actively avoiding anything which to my mind is over-hyped before
it's shown [I admit I got it wrong with Bridget Jone's Diary though!]
 |
Great casting, acting
& costumes, combined with insight into the 'above stairs'
life of wealthy, middle class Victorians, ensured that Sunday
night 'in' was a pleasure.
I'll definately be buying the video [released 13th May] for
my mum's birthday [21st May - lucky!] She in turn, bought my
father the original version for Christmas before we heard there
was going to be a re-make. |
