:: thursday 10 january 2002    "where it all started..."

I just can't get blogger to work for me so must be the thickest person on the planet. Nothing else for it but to follow my mother's advice "If you want something doing, do it yourself." Sometimes I think take this too literally & end up doing everything for everyone. Guess that's all part & parcel of being a mum (to Tom, Daisy, George & Arthur.)
It was great to have total freedom with the design of this page tho' and i've picked really girlie colours and a 50's retro look which I love (even tho' i'm a 60's babe.) Kinda reminds me of stuff we had at home when i was little. Ate out tonight en famile at the local-ish 50's diner (complete with pink cadillac on the roof.) Overcooked chicken, nice salad & so-so cheesecake. Shame as it's usually really good.
At least the company was the best.

Saw the most to die for Betsey Johnson slip dress on sale in a local store: cream & pink retro flowers with a lace-trimmed hem and only £25!!! ($40) The downside? a UK size 8 (US size 4??) Even my vivid imagination couldn't squeeze itself into that. Since i've been sitting here at a pc most days, nibbling on nuts & anything else to hand (partly in boredom while surfing & waiting for pages to load etc.) i've got soooo unfit & have gone from a UK size 10 to a 14. Along with probably half the population, my NY's resolution is to get fit & get slim. Not for anyone else, just me. I have a wardrobe of clothes which have either shrunk or are trying to tell me something.
Weight's a personal thing & I don't believe anyone should feel they have to look a certain way if they're happy & healthy. I don't feel too healthy so i'll be dragging the Pilates machine out from under the bed & exercising my sluggish body into shape over the coming months.
today rated 7 groovy on the groovy scale (would have been 8+ if i'd got the dress. how shallow is that?)

Ahhh the weekend. Late lie in this morning (9am is late when you have 4 kids.) Got up & made fresh coffee then did a bit of surfing after picking up my mail, checking out a few great British sites:

Glad to see that Lulu Guinness' cool-looking web site is now open with gorgeous pics of wish-list handbags.
Dropped in at Molton Brown where i get all my bathtime goodies (along with Cher, Tom Cruise & Madonna) and then off to see if Liz Earle's web site has reopened yet as i'm also getting low on skin treats. No. Poor skin.
What a wonderfully sybaritic morning!
Going over to Pixelitas later today - it's full of awesome talent and i'm their newbiest newbie i think. Maybe i'll see a few faces i recognize and get to meet lots of nice new people too. I had to create an 'about me' page sort of thing for them which you can see here

Horrid cold, dark, foggy day so after doing various stuff that had to be done, vegged out in front of a roaring fire watching favourite old black & white movies: Hitchcock's "Rebecca" & "Strangers on a Train" and the brilliant Alec Guiness in "Kind Hearts & Coronets." Retro Movies
I must have seen them all half a dozen times but isn't there something cosy & comforting about familiarity?

Not many people know this, but in 1975 i was going to marry one of the Bay City Rollers
I wasn't quite sure which one - it was a toss up between Les & Eric. Les was lean & sexy while Eric had gorgeous eyes and a husky voice. For a while, dreams of our life together filled every waking hour. Pocket money was spent on records, posters & any magazine with pictures of my guys in. Evenings were spent trimming everything in my wardrobe with tartan, and darning stripey socks.

I fell out with my mother around this time. Some magazine or other was running a competition to collect tokens from product X, the winner getting to spend a day with the band. Whatever the product was, we didn't normally use it and my mum refused to buy it just for the tokens. For a few weeks i plummeted the depths of despair, and to this day i don't think she realizes just how horribly scarred i was by the experience. (I did however get to go to a live concert later that year but Les & Eric didn't see me in the crowd.)
I can tell that you're all wondering where this is coming from/going.
The other night on TV there was a 'Where are They Now' type of programme featuring (obvious isn't it?) the Bay City Rollers.
It was a total trip down memory lane and at the end of it (while wiping away an emotional tear or two) i came to the conclusion that i'd probably had a lucky escape & that mothers often do know best!!

Looking forward with HUGE pleasure to Daisy's parents evening tonight. Not.
She's doing fine, i just hate all the waiting around and you can bet your bottom dollar that i'll be in the queue behind Mr & Mrs Smug.
(Emily Smug is absolutely brilliant at maths & physics, in all the sports teams, plays the cello and sings like an angel. Know her?)
They spend at least 3/4 of an hour with each teacher AND make copious notes in their special 'school' Filofax

9.15pm update: Ordeal over. Just a little worried that Daisy is in danger of becoming rather like Emma Smug (minus cello)

Memo to self : Must buy Filofax in morning ! ;)

Hi. My name is Ali and i'm a fontoholic.
I thought that now we're getting to know each other better it was time I revealed one of my personal failings. I'm not a solitary being with a unique malaise - there are thousands of like minded souls out there, some of whom will admit to having a problem & others who prefer to keep their shameful secret to themselves.
To the uninitiated and those who's appreciation of all things type doesn't run to quite the same fanatical level, we with the addiction are always looking for THE PERFECT FONT. It doesn't exist of course. What may be great for one piece of work looks quite wrong on another, but still we go on searching. On the way we get side-tracked by dozens (hundreds) of not-got-must-have files, so on they go to the hard drive which is now buckling under the weight.
I spent most of yesterday & this morning with my fonts: sorting out old fonts, trying out new fonts, and going online to find more fonts.
I have copious folders full of the wretched things, categorize into sections and subsections (many of which have further sections still)
I spend more on fonts than clothes, and tried desperately for a good half hour earlier today to fit the weekly shopping budget around two gorgeous new $65 fonts. (Couldn't do it, so the kids will eat.) ;)
As they say, a little of what you fancy does you good, but too much can be bloody hard work. Have to stop now - I hear ITC are having a sale!
